‘Fort Earth’

Curated Group Exhibition, Fortyfive Downstairs, Melbourne VIC 2024

When I first tried to tackle the task of creating sustainable and environmentally conscious artwork, I jumped into a world of natural pigments, handmade scrap paper, and secondhand clothes. I sourced sheets of recycled plastics to be cut into shapes to sit together. But I soon reassessed. This felt inauthentic. Despite my intentions, my process had inadvertently contributed to unnecessary demand for unsustainable products.

I love making art for people. For them to have in their space, to move through life with, to be passed on to new spaces. To evoke emotions, to be quietly contemplated. In a world of fast fashion, and overconsumption, I create artwork to last. So I went to my cupboard in my studio and pulled out materials that I already had. This piece was made at home with existing stuff.

The artwork itself is crafted to be viewed from any angle to encourage longevity and welcome diverse perspectives through time. My hope for this piece is that wherever it goes, it is always up, your way up.

Leftover watercolour paper, existing gouache from the cupboard, pastel pencils borrowed off my partner, framed locally.

630mm x 830mm

This piece will be available to purchase from upcoming exhibition or online post show.
